JLPT3: ことにする


日本語： [verb (base 1/3)] ことにする。
English: Decide to do...

Yes, I'm going for the 日本語能力試験３ in December. So I guess it's time to start cramming up on the grammar I'll need to know. This one is a bit confusing as it also appears to be on the level 2 list of grammar, but hey, it's a handy one so we'll cover it anyway.

ことにする is used when you want to say that someone decided to do something and, as such, it's usually found in past tense conjugation. The emphasis here is that the person you are talking about did the deciding - it was decision they came to themselves. If you want to say that the decision was made for them, I think you would use ことになる which is JLPT2 stuff.

One final point, if saying 'decided not to', then the base 1 ない ending becomes なさ.

例文：

English: I have decided to study for the JPLT3 in December.
Jenglish: [December][in][JLPT3][study][decided]
日本語：　　１２月に日本語能力試験３を勉強することにしました。

English: The teacher decided to quit because the job became too stressful.
Jenglish: [job][stressful+too][became][because][teacher][quit][decided]
日本語：　　仕事がストレスになったから、先生は辞めることにしました。

Actually, how do you say 'stressful' in Japanese.

（12月の日本語能力試験3のために勉強することにしました。is also ok.）

The teacher decided to quit because the job became too stressful.

先生は仕事がとてもストレスになったため、辞めることにしました。

Yes, Dave, stressful is ストレスになる、ストレスの多い in Japanese.

例文：
I've been having stressful days recently.

私は最近ストレスの多い日々を過ごしています。

Of course! I forgot to translate 'for'. However, could I use に備えてin this case to mean for?

One other question? Why use １２月の。。。I thought that to say 'in December' I would use the particle に.

Yes, I translated 12月の here.
Actually, English 'preposition' and Japanese 'particle' are small words, but quite difficult to deal with and translate. I think particle can be translated flexibily. For example,

I visited Kyoto in July.
私は7月に京都を訪れました。

Here I translated 'in July' 'に'.

The trip to Kyoto in July was really nice.
7月の京都への旅行は、本当に素晴らしかった。

Yes, I used 'の' here.

I'm afraid you get confused...(*_*)
Hmm, but English 'particle' and 'preposition' are really complicated!

I think I get it.

7月の京都への旅行は can be translated as 'July's trip to Tokyo', whereas 7月に京都への旅行は is translated as 'The trip to Tokyo in July'?

7月の京都への旅行は楽しかった。
-> July's trip to Kyoto was fun.

7月に京都へ旅行したのは間違いだった。京都の夏はものすごく暑い！
-> The trip to Kyoto in July was wrong. Kyoto is terribly hot in summer!
